A classic fairy tale is getting a modern twist as Comic (book) Opera brings its world-premiere production of Cendrillon to Bonnyville this June.
The Alberta-based opera company is touring four communities across the province with Jules Massenet’s beloved retelling of Cinderella, blending traditional opera with contemporary graphic novel animation in what organizers describe as a first-of-its-kind production.
Performed in French with English subtitles, Cendrillon follows the familiar story of Cinderella, her father, stepmother and stepsisters as they prepare for a royal ball. However, audiences can expect a fresh take on the tale, featuring fairies, spirits, elves and pixies that are not always what they seem.
The production is led by Edmonton’s Douglas Graham, artistic director of Comic (book) Opera and a recent Juno Award winner. Graham says the show combines the beauty of traditional opera with modern visual storytelling techniques.
“This is true opera with a live cast of singers and orchestra,” said Graham. “It’s staged in 19th Century Paris, but the medium used to stage the performance is contemporary 21st Century. This world-premiere production is happening here in Alberta right now. You don’t want to miss it.”
The unique staging uses graphic novel-style animation to transport audiences to 19th Century Paris, creating an immersive visual backdrop for the live performers and orchestra.
After more than a year of production design and development, the show is set to make its debut as part of a provincial tour that includes performances in Edmonton, Bonnyville, Sherwood Park and Camrose between June 11 and June 21.
Organizers say audiences can expect a visually stunning production that appeals to both opera enthusiasts and those experiencing opera for the first time.
Tickets range from $40 to $50 and are available online.
