Alberta Health Services (AHS) is advising the public not to swim or wade at Stoney Lake Municipal Campground Beach after elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected in the water.
The advisory takes effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
According to AHS, the current bacteria levels could cause gastrointestinal illness if contaminated water is swallowed. Contact with the water may also increase the risk of skin, ear and eye infections.
Visitors and residents are reminded not to drink or cook with untreated water from any lake or reservoir, as water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause illness such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Environmental Public Health officers with AHS will continue monitoring water quality at the beach and will provide updates as testing results become available.
The advisory remains in effect until AHS determines the water is safe for recreational use.
