Physician recruitment, healthcare expansion and growing medical infrastructure continue to be major priorities in Cold Lake as the city prepares for significant population growth tied to military and economic development in the region.
Healthcare discussions surfaced several times during recent Cold Lake council meetings, including updates surrounding regional physician recruitment efforts, the expansion of the Cold Lake Medical Clinic and new healthcare training opportunities tied to aviation and defence growth.
During council highlights at the May 26 meeting, council members discussed ongoing physician recruitment efforts through the Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) and regional healthcare partnerships to attract more doctors and other medical professionals to northeastern Alberta.
The discussions come as Cold Lake continues preparing for hundreds of new permanent and temporary jobs expected through the Future Fighter Capability Project at 4 Wing Cold Lake.
Medical clinic expansion tied to growing demand
One of the largest healthcare-related projects currently underway in Cold Lake is the expansion of the Cold Lake Medical Clinic, which council says is already seeing increased demand.
During recent council discussions surrounding project financing and budget amendments, administration said the clinic has grown significantly in recent years.
“The Cold Lake medical clinic now is up to seven doctors within that small facility. It is doing very well and with further expression of interest. So therefore expansion is necessary,” administration told council.
The project includes plans for additional leasable commercial and healthcare space beyond the medical clinic itself.
Administration said the goal is to create a more sustainable long-term facility that can support additional services and future healthcare-related businesses.
The expansion is also tied to the city’s MRI initiative, which would allow residents greater access to advanced diagnostic imaging locally instead of travelling to larger centres.
Council previously approved borrowing bylaws and budget amendments tied to the MRI equipment and clinic expansion project.
During discussion surrounding the construction, administration noted the specialized nature of the facility.
The project requires sophisticated construction “to protect the magnets that have to be involved in these types of facilities,” council heard during the meeting.
Council also approved capital budget amendments connected to the project, with administration noting they did not want to delay funding or slow the development timeline.
Healthcare growth connected to aviation and military expansion
Cold Lake’s healthcare discussions are increasingly being tied to broader military, aviation and economic growth projections in the region.
Mayor Bob Mattice recently spoke about the level of national attention Cold Lake is receiving during the Alberta Aviation and Aerospace Summit, particularly surrounding defence and infrastructure opportunities connected to 4 Wing.
“There’s a lot of people … talking about Cold Lake and talking about defence and the opportunities that are here. So it’s a really really bright future,” Mattice said.
The healthcare conversation also intersects with Portage College’s new Aircraft Structures Technician program launching in Cold Lake, which is expected to bring additional students, instructors and aviation-sector growth to the community over the coming years.
City officials have repeatedly noted that healthcare capacity, housing and workforce attraction will all need to grow together as Cold Lake prepares for long-term expansion.
Council discussions over the past several months have increasingly focused on ensuring infrastructure and services keep pace with the region’s expected growth.
