Resident concerns surrounding municipal services, infrastructure and waste management were front and centre during Elk Point council’s May 25 meeting as the Town continues preparing for major recycling changes and a transition in garbage collection services.
Several concerns were raised through the Mayor Meet-Up initiative, including issues related to sewer infrastructure, garbage pickup, and seasonal community maintenance.
Sewer concerns continue in parts of town
Mayor Wanda Cochrane said one resident raised ongoing sewer concerns tied to both private property and possible municipal infrastructure.
“It seems to be an ongoing issue,” Cochrane said. “So, we had a good conversation and hopefully I directed this person into a resolution.”
She noted the issue may involve a combination of private and municipal infrastructure concerns.
“She knows there’s an issue on their property, but is there also an issue on town property? So, we’re going to have to hopefully figure that out.”
Council acknowledged sewer concerns continue to surface periodically in some areas of the community and may require larger long-term infrastructure solutions.
Garbage pickup changes begin June 3
Council also reminded residents that town-wide garbage collection will officially move to Wednesdays beginning June 3 as part of Elk Point’s transition to contracted waste services.
“Just a reminder that Wednesday, June 3rd will be garbage pickup for everybody in town,” Cochrane said. “So, it’s probably a good idea to have your garbage can out on Tuesday night because they start early.”
The Town has been preparing residents for the service change over the past several weeks.
Recycling rollout bringing confusion and concern
Discussion also turned toward Alberta’s upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) recycling rollout and ongoing concerns being heard across the region regarding blue bin implementation.
During committee updates related to the Evergreen Regional Landfill, council heard that there is still considerable confusion about how the new recycling system will work.
“There was a lot of confusion and there’s some disappointment because of what we thought was going to occur is not occurring,” council heard during the discussion.
Concerns were also raised that residents accustomed to bagging recyclables may simply continue throwing materials away if expectations are unclear.
Council heard that significant public education will be needed regarding the recycling transition to ensure participation and avoid undermining the program’s goals.
Regional landfill operations and environmental compliance pressures were also discussed as municipalities continue adjusting to changing provincial waste management requirements.
Councillors emphasized the importance of keeping residents informed as service changes continue.
