Vehicle thefts continue to be a growing concern across Alberta, with thousands of vehicles stolen and broken into each year.

As part of Crime Prevention Month this May, Alberta RCMP are reminding residents to take simple precautions to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of vehicle theft or theft from vehicles.

According to RCMP statistics, there were 7,214 motor vehicle thefts in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions in 2025, along with 5,134 reported vehicle thefts. Half-ton trucks were identified as the most commonly stolen vehicle type.

Police say many thefts are crimes of opportunity and can often be prevented by building simple habits into daily routines.

Among the tips shared by RCMP are reminders to never leave a vehicle unattended while it is running or with the keys inside, even for a short period of time. Drivers are also encouraged to always lock their vehicles and close windows when parked.

RCMP are warning residents not to leave garage door openers, spare keys, wallets or documents containing personal information inside their vehicles. Thieves can use these items not only to steal vehicles, but also to gain access to homes.

Parking in well-lit areas or inside a locked garage whenever possible can also help deter theft. Police additionally recommend removing valuables, loose change and personal belongings from vehicles, as visible items can attract opportunistic thieves.

While vehicle-related crime remains prevalent across the province, RCMP say taking a few preventative steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a target.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to local police. Anyone witnessing a crime in progress should call 911 immediately.

Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or through the P3 Tips mobile app.
