An Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation is underway after a Cold Lake RCMP officer shot an armed suspect during a domestic incident Tuesday morning.

Cold Lake RCMP responded to a call at approximately 9:47 a.m. on Aug. 4 involving a domestic situation with a weapon in the 5600 block of 54 Street.

According to RCMP, officers encountered a suspect who was armed with a weapon. During the interaction, an officer discharged their service firearm, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. No RCMP officers were injured during the incident.

As required under Alberta legislation, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

RCMP said it will fully cooperate with the investigation. The force has also initiated its own internal review, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including officer training, policy, police response and the officer’s duty status.
