PUBLIC WORKS OPERATOR I
The Town of Bonnyville is seeking a motivated and team-oriented individual for the position of Public Works Operator I. This is a permanent full-time position reporting to the Operations Director or designate. The successful candidate will support the maintenance and operation of municipal services, with a primary focus on water and wastewater utilities, while also assisting transportation and landfill operations as required.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, commitment to workplace safety, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative environment.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class 3Q Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement
- Ability to provide a current Driver’s Abstract
- Strong communication skills with the ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Proven ability to work effectively within a team environment
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience operating heavy equipment and machinery
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Level 1 Water Certification
- Level 1 Wastewater Certification
- Confined Space Entry Certification
- Experience operating bobcats, backhoes, wheel loaders, and related equipment
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate light-duty equipment such as roller packers, light trucks, and skid steers
- Operate heavy equipment including gravel trucks, backhoes, and wheel loaders
- Perform routine equipment maintenance including fueling, greasing, oil changes, and cleaning
- Carry out manual labour tasks related to lift stations, reservoirs, and sewage collection systems
- Assist Transportation Department and Landfill operations as directed
- Support community events by erecting decorations, banners, flags, and holiday lighting
- Follow all Occupational Health & Safety procedures and safe work practices
- Participate in hazard identification and near-miss reporting
- Complete technical paperwork accurately and in a timely manner
- Perform additional related duties as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Physically demanding work environment involving lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, and climbing
- Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Work may involve confined spaces and working at heights
- Rotational standby shifts and overtime may be required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift and carry between 15 kg and 25 kg
- Ability to walk on uneven surfaces and perform repetitive physical tasks
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing is required
- Must be willing to work standby shifts and overtime as required
- Commitment to pursuing additional certifications related to utilities, roads, or parks operations
