Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the M.D. of Bonnyville, including Bonnyville, Ardmore and Kehewin Cree Nation, due to conditions favourable for the development of funnel clouds Tuesday afternoon.
Meteorologists say the funnel clouds are caused by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. While this type of rotation is usually not dangerous near the ground, there is a possibility it could intensify into a weak landspout tornado.
Environment Canada says landspout tornadoes do not typically cause major damage but can still pose a danger. They are capable of toppling trees, damaging roofs and tossing debris short distances.
Residents are being urged to take any funnel cloud sightings seriously and be prepared to take shelter if conditions worsen. Funnel clouds can develop quickly and often with little or no warning.
Officials are reminding the public to continue monitoring Environment Canada forecasts and alerts throughout the day.
Severe weather can be reported to Environment Canada by emailing ABstorm@ec.gc.ca, calling 1-800-239-0484 or posting on X using #ABStorm.
