Lloydminster RCMP say one person has been arrested after multiple reports of a male allegedly pointing what appeared to be a firearm at vehicles, including a school bus, on Wednesday morning.
Police said the calls came in around 8:37 a.m. on May 6, 2026.
RCMP members responded immediately with assistance from the Lloydminster RCMP General Investigation Unit and Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services. Officers briefly shut down the area while the suspect was taken into custody.
An imitation firearm was seized during the arrest.
Investigation Ongoing
RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing.
The male suspect was later released on conditions and is scheduled to appear before Lloydminster Provincial Court on July 6, 2026.
Police say charges being considered include:
- Assault with a weapon
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
RCMP Previously Warned About Replica Firearms
The incident comes just weeks after Lloydminster RCMP issued a public safety reminder to youth and parents about the dangers of replica firearms, including airsoft, pellet, BB and toy guns.
Between April 14 and 22, 2026, RCMP responded to several firearm-related complaints involving youths. Police safely seized one airsoft-style toy gun during those incidents and warned that imitation firearms are often impossible to distinguish from real weapons during emergency calls.
“This incident could have had very serious consequences,” said Sgt. Chris Byford, Operations Supervisor with Lloydminster RCMP, in the earlier release. “Replica firearms can look very real and can still cause injury to others and/or damage to property. Police officers have no way of knowing otherwise when responding to a firearms call.”
RCMP also stressed that all firearm-related calls are treated as high-priority public safety incidents, meaning officers must assume reported weapons are real until proven otherwise.
Police reminded parents to speak with youth about the risks of carrying or displaying imitation firearms in public spaces, noting that such items can lead to seizure, criminal charges, or other enforcement action, depending on the circumstances.
RCMP Thank Public for Reporting Incident
Lloydminster RCMP thanked members of the public for quickly reporting Wednesday’s incident, allowing officers to respond rapidly.
Police also confirmed there is no ongoing danger to the public related to the incident.
