The St. Paul RCMP is bringing back one of the community’s longest-running youth events this week, as the 44th Annual RCMP Challenge Cup Relay Race hits the road on Wednesday, May 6.
A tradition built on community and connection
Better known locally as the RCMP Road Race, the event has become a staple across the Lakeland. It brings together students, schools, and law enforcement in a setting focused on connection, teamwork, and wellness.
The race is designed to give youth a chance to interact with RCMP members in a positive and approachable way. Organizers say that building those relationships early matters — helping young people feel comfortable turning to police when they need support.
Participation continues to grow each year, with junior and senior high school teams from across the region taking part.
What to expect on race day
The relay race will begin just west of St. Brides and head east along Highway 29, finishing in St. Paul at the Recreation Centre.
- Start time: Shortly after 10:00 a.m.
- Finish time: Around 12:30 p.m.
- Finish line: St. Paul Recreation Centre (4802 53 Street)
Each runner will complete a one-mile stretch before passing the baton to the next teammate.
Spectators are welcome, but organizers are asking the public to watch from the finish line only.
Traffic and safety reminders
Drivers should expect increased activity along Highway 29 during the race window. Runners will be travelling along the south shoulder, and RCMP officers, along with other public safety partners, will be on site to manage traffic and keep participants safe.
There are a few important rules in place:
- No vehicles are allowed to follow or drive alongside runners
- Only authorized vehicles can park south of the highway
- All traffic laws remain in effect throughout the event
The St. Paul RCMP says the cooperation of the public is key to ensuring a safe and successful race for everyone involved.
More than just a race
For the St. Paul Detachment, this event is about more than competition. It’s about building trust, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and strengthening ties between youth and the community.
After 44 years, it’s clear the RCMP Road Race continues to deliver on all fronts.
