Cold Lake city council approved a mix of economic development and local business items during its April 28 meeting, advancing long-term planning for commercial growth while also renewing a long-standing patio agreement in the downtown core.
Imperial Park planning moves ahead
Council approved a $20,000 capital budget amendment to support the Imperial Park Commercial Servicing Plan.
The project will help prepare land near the Energy Centre for future commercial development, including planning for water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure.
Administration said the City has secured $100,000 in provincial funding, with the total project estimated at about $220,000.
The goal is to make the land more attractive and ready for investment.
“Making it more readily accessible on commercial properties… being sought by investors that are coming to the community,” administration said.
The planning process will include public engagement and a future public hearing before any final development plans are approved.
OJ’s patio agreement renewed
Council also approved a new three-year encroachment agreement for Original Joe’s, allowing the restaurant to continue operating its outdoor patio on City sidewalk space along 53 Street.
The patio has been in place since 2009 without issues.
“Original Joe’s has had their patio in this location since 2009, and no operational issues have been identified,” administration said.
The agreement includes a $500 administrative fee for the three-year term, with an option to renew.
Mayor Bob Mattice raised broader questions about how patio fees are handled in larger cities, though administration noted Cold Lake already collects property taxes tied to the space in addition to the agreement.
