Northern Lights Public Schools trustees have officially approved the name of a new elementary school in Lac La Biche, while also pointing to stronger community engagement and student input across the division.

The announcement came during the board’s April 22 meeting, where Northern Skies Elementary School was confirmed as the name for the new build currently under construction near the Bold Centre.

New school name backed by strong community support

The name follows a multi փուլ community process that included three rounds of engagement. A total of 763 people took part in the final vote, with 78.8 per cent supporting Northern Skies Elementary.

Trustees said the name reflects the natural beauty of the region and the aspirations for students to grow and succeed. Work will now move ahead on branding and logo development.

Community engagement on the rise

Board members also highlighted what they described as a noticeable increase in community involvement.

Trustees reported stronger turnout and more meaningful conversations at school council meetings in Glendon, Lac La Biche and Bonnyville, as well as at Vera M. Welsh Elementary School. A recent meet-and-greet with elected officials was also seen as a positive step toward improving regional collaboration.

Students speak up on future opportunities

Student voice was another key focus at the meeting.

Trustees praised students who took part in the April 20 Student Advisory Council meeting, noting their openness and honesty while discussing communication challenges and opportunities for expanded dual credit programming.

School visits showcase talent and pride

Recent school tours also left a strong impression on trustees.

Board members pointed to standout moments like Aurora Middle School’s Grade 8 music presentation, saying they were impressed by both the talent and the level of school pride being shown across the division.

Calendar change approved for École Plamondon

The board also approved a calendar adjustment for École Plamondon School, making Friday, May 1 a non-instructional day.

The change will allow staff to take part in a pilot project focused on high-impact literacy strategies and supports for English as an Additional Language learners.
