TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR

The Town of Bonnyville is seeking an experienced and motivated Transportation Supervisor to provide leadership, planning, and oversight of transportation and landfill operations. This role ensures the efficient delivery of maintenance programs and compliance with municipal standards, safety regulations, and environmental requirements.

The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, operational expertise, and a commitment to safety and service excellence.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ supervisory experience, preferably in municipal public works, transportation, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of municipal operations, service delivery, and organizational structure.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation and safety programs.
  • Experience in road maintenance, infrastructure rehabilitation, and landfill operations.
  • Strong leadership ability with experience motivating, coaching, and supporting teams.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 3 or higher considered an asset).

 

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant certifications in landfill operations, safety training, or supervisory programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership & Supervision:

  • Provide daily leadership, mentorship, and guidance to transportation and landfill staff.
  • Foster a positive and safety-focused work environment.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support staff development.
  • Participate in recruitment and coordinate staff scheduling and work assignments.

Operational Management:

  • Oversee maintenance programs, including road patching, sidewalk repair, and curb and gutter rehabilitation.
  • Manage departmental operating budgets and ensure cost-effective resource use.
  • Provide input into capital planning and long-term infrastructure strategies.
  • Ensure timely completion of work orders, inspections, and service requests.

Landfill Operations:

  • Supervise daily operations of the Town’s Class III landfill.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, municipal bylaws, and provincial standards.
  • Oversee waste handling, site maintenance, record-keeping, and reporting.
  • Coordinate with contractors, regulators, and internal departments.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Enforce and promote adherence to the Town’s Safety Program.
  • Ensure compliance with Alberta OHS legislation.
  • Conduct safety meetings, hazard assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure staff are properly trained and equipped.

Municipal Coordination:

  • Collaborate with other departments to support integrated service delivery.
  • Contribute to municipal planning, budgeting, and operational strategies.
  • Respond to public inquiries and concerns professionally and promptly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Combination of office and field work in varying weather conditions.
  • Participation in on-call rotation or after-hours response may be required.
  • Use of municipal vehicles, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing is required.
