Lakeland College students are taking the lead on the future of farming, bringing producers, tech leaders and industry experts together for a hands-on look at where agriculture is headed.
On April 9, students in the Bachelor of Agriculture Technology (BAT) program will host Farm 4.0: From Dirt to Data at the Vermilion Regional Centre. The student-led event is designed to connect real-world agriculture with rapidly advancing technology, and show how the next generation is preparing to bridge that gap.
Students driving innovation in agriculture
The event highlights how technology is becoming essential in modern farming, from precision tools to data-driven decision-making. Organizers say the goal is to balance productivity with environmental stewardship while strengthening rural communities.
Attendees can expect live demonstrations, trade show exhibits, and presentations focused on practical applications of ag tech.
Topics include:
- Ag tech today and tomorrow
- Precision farming in real-world settings
- Efficiency, sustainability and smarter management
- Livestock tech and operational improvements
- Using NDVI and advanced field analysis tools
- Real-world learning meets industry connection
The keynote speaker, Kaitlyn Kitzan of Kitzan Strategic Solutions, brings experience in turning ideas into real impact across agriculture, rural development and community leadership.
Students will also present their own practicum work, giving attendees a direct look at how classroom learning is translating into real solutions.
Current BAT student Samantha Bracken says the event has been a major focus all semester.
“Farm 4.0 has been our baby all semester,” she said. “It gives us the chance to connect with industry professionals and learn about what’s ahead as we transition into the workforce.”
Open to the public
This marks the fourth year for Farm 4.0, and the event continues to grow in both scope and impact.
The event is free to attend and open to the public. It runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 9 at the Vermilion Regional Centre.
For anyone involved in agriculture — or curious about where it’s heading — this is a front-row seat to the future being built right here in the Lakeland.
