Canada Day planning is already underway in Elk Point, with fireworks confirmed for June 30 and several familiar activities expected to return.

Council heard updates on March 9 through committee reports, including plans for the petting zoo, face painting, sparkle tattoos, and live entertainment.

Mayor Wanda Cochrane said the town has heard mixed opinions about holding fireworks the night before Canada Day, but the June 30 timing will stay in place.

“We aren’t able to get them for July 1st,” she said. “And then we have a lot of people that do like it on the 30th.”

Council also heard that the Friends of the Library have offered to host the pancake breakfast again, while the Lions are considering a duck race on the river.

The riding arena has also agreed to host an event, though details are still being finalized.

Other pieces still being worked through include food vendors, a possible movie night, a mini market, traffic control around the arena and whether the Allied Arts will host the perogy supper.

Mayor Cochrane said the day is still taking shape, but there is no shortage of ideas.

“There’s lots things still being discussed,” she said, later adding that events such as a soap box derby, family challenge and firefighter challenge are also being considered.

The town also plans to have programming on June 30 to build momentum ahead of the main Canada Day celebrations.
