Elk Point Firefighters Honoured at Annual Fireman’s Ball
Elk Point showed up in full force to celebrate its firefighters this week, as community leaders and residents gathered for the annual Elk Point Fireman’s Ball.
The evening was more than a celebration. It was a clear reminder of how much this community values the men and women who train, respond and serve whenever duty calls.
A Night of Recognition and Community Pride

MLA Scott Cyr with Elk Point Fire Department
MLA Scott Cyr attended the event alongside his wife Megan and said the turnout spoke volumes about local support for emergency services.
“It was a pleasure to attend the Elk Point Fireman’s Ball and join our community in celebrating the outstanding members of the Elk Point Fire Department,” said Cyr. “From the evening program recognizing firefighters’ service to the strong community turnout, the event was a wonderful reminder of how much Elk Point supports those who dedicate their time to protecting others.”
Throughout the evening, firefighters were recognized for their service and commitment. Volunteer departments like Elk Point’s play a critical role in rural Alberta, responding not only to fires but to collisions, medical calls and community emergencies.
“Our firefighters give countless hours in training, emergency response and community service, and they truly represent the best of our region,” Cyr added.
A New Appreciation for the Gear They Wear
The event also included a lighter moment, as Cyr and Megan had the chance to try on firefighter helmets.
“Megan and I also had the opportunity to try on firefighter helmets during the evening. Feeling the weight of that equipment was a powerful reminder of the responsibility our firefighters carry every day,” said Cyr. “I picked the Deputy Chief helmet, while Megan chose the Captain’s. I am fairly certain she still outranks me at home.”
He said the experience gave them both a new appreciation for the equipment firefighters wear each time they respond to a call.
Leaders Highlight Importance of Support
Elk Point Mayor Wanda Cochrane delivered remarks highlighting the pride the community feels for its firefighters and the appreciation residents have for their sacrifices.
County of St. Paul Councillor Gerald Michaud also spoke about the importance of continued support for volunteer firefighters and emergency services.
Cyr noted it was also special to connect with Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson and her father, a former Fire Chief of St. Paul. At 91 years old, he continues to inspire with his lifelong commitment to service.
Backbone of Rural Public Safety
Cyr emphasized the critical role volunteer fire departments play across the Lakeland and rural Alberta.
“Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of public safety in many of our communities, and I will continue working to ensure they have the support and resources they need to do their critical work,” he said. “Their commitment, training and readiness help protect families, homes and local businesses every single day. Investing in our volunteer firefighters means investing directly in the safety and resilience of our communities.”
He also extended thanks to Fire Chief Bryce Osinchuk, Lieutenant Danielle Fedirko and the entire leadership team of the Elk Point Fire Department for the invitation, along with appreciation for the firefighters, their families and volunteers who support them behind the scenes.
For Elk Point, the message was clear: community strength starts with those willing to answer the call.
