Extreme Cold Warning Issued for the Lakeland Region
Wind chills near minus 40 are expected across the Lakeland Region, putting everyone at risk.
Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the Lakeland Region, including the M.D. of Bonnyville near Cold Lake and the City of Cold Lake. A period of very cold wind chills near or below -40 is forecast. Conditions are expected to moderate Thursday morning, but the deep freeze could return again Thursday night.
Who Is Most at Risk
Extreme cold can affect anyone, but the risks are greater for:
-
Young children
-
Older adults
-
People with chronic illnesses
-
Those working or exercising outdoors
-
Anyone without proper shelter
Watch for Warning Signs
Cold-related symptoms can develop quickly. Be alert for:
-
Shortness of breath
-
Chest pain
-
Muscle pain and weakness
-
Numbness
-
Colour changes in fingers and toes
Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Cover up all exposed skin and limit time outdoors.
And remember — if it is too cold for you to stay outside, it is too cold for your pet to stay outside.
