Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Collision on Highway 16 Near Vermilion
A 35-year-old woman from Ontario has died after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 16 near Vermilion.
According to Vermilion RCMP, officers received multiple calls around 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 reporting a pedestrian walking along the highway. Shortly after, RCMP, Vermilion Fire and Vermilion EMS were dispatched to the scene of a collision involving that pedestrian.
Difficult to See in Early Morning Hours
Initial reports indicate the woman was walking in the same direction as traffic and was wearing dark coloured clothing, making her difficult to see in the early morning conditions.
The pedestrian, identified as a 35-year-old female resident of Dundas, Ontario, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Vermilion RCMP, with assistance from an Alberta RCMP Collision Reconstructionist, continue to investigate. At this time, police say there is no reason to believe the collision was criminal in nature.
“This is a dreadful situation for all involved, be it the pedestrian, their family, the driver, or the emergency personnel on scene,” said Cpl. Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP. “These types of collision investigations are rare in the Vermilion area and I would like to thank the public who was travelling on Highway 16 for being respectful to all of the emergency crews who were working on scene.”
