M.D. Moves Property Tax Deadline to June 30
Property owners in the M.D. will now need to pay their taxes earlier in the year.
At its February 10 Regular Meeting, Council passed Amending Bylaw No. 1927, officially moving the annual property tax deadline from September 15 to June 30.
Why the Change?
The amendment updates the existing Unpaid Tax Penalty Bylaw to allow the M.D. to collect tax revenue in the first half of the year.
According to Calvin Bespalko, Manager of Assessment Services, the shift makes financial sense.
“Over 40 per cent of M.D. expenses are experienced between May and September — construction season,” said Bespalko. “By collecting property taxes early, the M.D. won’t have to dip into investment accounts to pay the bills, allowing for the M.D. to collect more interest from those investments.”
In short, collecting taxes earlier reduces the need to withdraw from investments during peak spending months. That allows those investments to continue earning interest.
What It Means for Taxpayers
The additional interest earned can then be redirected toward future projects, helping lessen the overall burden on taxpayers over time.
The idea to move the deadline came out of the financial framework adopted in 2024. That framework established standardized business practices and policies aimed at strengthening long-term financial stewardship.
What’s Next
More information will be released soon regarding updates to the M.D.’s monthly tax payment program.
The 2026 Tax and Assessment Notices are still expected to be mailed out by the end of May, as is typical.
