Stella Mary Lomenda

August 2, 1936 – February 5, 2026

 

Stella Mary was born to Mike & Mary Hnatyshyn at Ituna, Saskatchewan on August 2, 1936 and passed away at the Bonnyville Healthcare Centre surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, February 5, 2026 at the age of 89 years.

 

 

Stella grew up and attended school in Ituna, later finding employment as a nurses aid in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. This would be where she met the love of her life, Thomas. They were married on November 27, 1954 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. They were blessed with six children residing in Calgary, Alberta, where they raised them.

 

 

Stella will be dearly missed by her 6 children: Clifford (Patsy) Lomenda of Calgary, AB, Karen Lomenda of Calgary, AB, Lorraine (Tim) Trafford of Pierceland, SK, Sandra (Randy) Stolz of Acadia Valley, AB, Tim Lomenda of Bonnyville, AB, Pat (Stan) Smith of Bonnyville, AB; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 2 siblings: Joe Hnatyshyn, Geraldine Zilavec; sister-in-law: Viola Hnatyshyn.

 

 

Stella loved cooking for her family and friends and will be remembered for her love of sewing as her hands were rarely still, often creating beautiful quilts for family & friends.

 

 

Stella was predeceased by her loving husband: Thomas Lomenda (June 16, 2017); parents: Mary & Mike Hnatyshyn; brothers: Allen & Leo Hnatyshyn; sister-in-law: Judy Hnatyshyn.

 

 

In lieu of flowers memorial tributes in memory of Stella may be sent to the Bonnyville & District SPCA.

 

 

Prayer Service, Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., Northern Lights Funeral Chapel, Bonnyville with cremation to follow. Inurnment to take place at a later date, Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta.
