MD of Bonnyville Approves Revised 2026 Bridge Program, Leaves Door Open on Closures
Council has approved a revised 2026 bridge work program that reshapes how infrastructure dollars will be spent across the MD of Bonnyville.
Administration said the revised plan reflects feedback from budget deliberations, a bridge workshop, and council planning sessions held earlier this year.
“The revised program reflects feedback received during the 2026 budget deliberations, the bridge workshop, and council planning sessions,” administration told council.
What the revised plan includes
The updated program includes:
-
Cancellation of two bridge replacement projects
-
Added construction funding for three bridge replacements
-
Added engineering and construction funding for one rehabilitation project
-
Engineering funding for three new bridge replacement projects
Council approved $4.625 million in funding, with $1.13 million returned to the bridge reserve.
Concerns over access and detours
Several councillors raised concerns about agricultural access and detour distances, particularly near Muriel Lake.
“That bridge makes a significant difference to farmers who operate on both sides of it,” administration said. “Without it, the detour is several miles.”
Administration confirmed one bridge south of Muriel Lake remains closed for safety reasons and said council is not committing to a permanent closure yet.
“At this point, I’m proposing to leave the bridge in a bit of a state of limbo to test the waters and see the public’s appetite for a permanent closure,” administration explained.
Council approved the revised program while leaving room to respond to public feedback.
