Female Panthers Compete at Wickfest Tournament in Surrey

Hayley Wickenheiser was the face of Team Canada women’s hockey for many years. Today, she continues to grow the women’s game through her role with the Toronto Maple Leafs and as the founder of Wickfest — an all-female minor hockey tournament series for U11 through U18 teams, hosted in Milton, Calgary, Surrey and Las Vegas.
Earlier this season, the U13 AA Female Panthers submitted their entry to compete in the Surrey stop of Wickfest. Last Thursday, players, coaches and parents travelled from various Lakeland region homes to Vancouver, ready for a weekend of elite competition and team bonding.
Wickfest Surrey featured teams from across Western Canada and the United States, playing at multiple arenas throughout the Vancouver area. The U13 division included 20 teams, divided into four tiers of five teams each. The Panthers were placed in the top tier, U13 Platinum — the highest level of U13 competition at the tournament. One team in the division was a U15 squad, included to balance team numbers.
Thursday Pep Rally & PWHL Experience
The Wickfest experience began even before puck drop with a Thursday night Pep Rally hosted by the PWHL, giving players a front-row look at the highest level of women’s professional hockey and the pathways now available in the sport.
As part of the event, the Panthers attended a PWHL game where the Toronto Sceptres were defeated 5–0 by the Goldeneyes. The game was highlighted by Sarah Nurse, who scored two goals in her first game back from injury, including tallies against her former Toronto teammates.
For the young Panthers, the night served as both inspiration and motivation — a powerful reminder of what is possible in women’s hockey today and the level of dedication required to reach it.
Panthers Open with Shutout Win
The Panthers opened the tournament Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. against the Sno-King Thunderbirds, earning a hard-fought 1–0 victory.
Maja Pinch scored the lone goal of the game, while Maja and Baylee were named Players of the Game. Baylee delivered a steady, composed performance in key moments as the Panthers secured their first win of Wickfest.

Scored the lone goal of the game, made fierce plays and brought all-heart, give-and-go energy when it mattered most.

Calm under pressure and clutch in big moments, delivering a steady, composed performance throughout the game.
Tight Loss to Kelowna
Friday evening at 7:15 p.m., the Panthers faced the Kelowna Rockets (U15). The game remained tied until the final five minutes before Kelowna pulled ahead for a 3–1 win.
Aspyn Kelly scored the Panthers’ goal, while Morgan and Grace earned Player of the Game honours. Morgan set the tone with a strong, physical presence, while Grace brought speed and energy throughout the contest.

An absolute powerhouse. Strong and steady, setting the tone every shift with physical, reliable play.

Fast, fearless and relentless. Brought spark and momentum with full-send energy all game long.
Tough Matchup Against Tri-Cities
The Panthers’ toughest challenge came against the Tri-Cities Predators (U15), falling 4–0 despite a determined defensive effort.
Jayvrie and Mia were named Players of the Game. Jayvrie kept the score close with composed, fearless goaltending, while Mia delivered one of her strongest performances of the tournament, showing excellent hockey IQ and smart decision-making.

Kept the margins tight with fearless, composed goaltending. Locked in under pressure and stood tall throughout.

One of her strongest games of the tournament. Showed excellent hockey IQ with smart reads, calm decision-making and confident puck play.
Panthers Finish Strong
The Panthers closed round-robin play with authority, defeating the North Island Impact 3–0.
Maja Pinch scored once, while Kaleigha Dion added two goals. Vienna and Jada were named Players of the Game. Vienna provided energy and smart play every shift, while Jada was strong on the puck, drove hard to the net and was difficult to contain.

Quick, smart and buzzing every shift. Brought nonstop energy and hype that lifted the entire bench.

Strong on the puck with fast feet and determined drives. Difficult to contain and relentless all game.
Tournament Results
The Panthers finished Wickfest with a 2–2 record, the same as the Kelowna Rockets. However, because Kelowna won the head-to-head matchup, they advanced to the gold medal game. The championship was ultimately won by the Tri-Cities Predators (U15).
The Panthers finished third overall in U13 Platinum, competing at the highest U13 level at Wickfest. Missing the gold medal game by one point on point differential was disappointing, but the experience gained against elite competition was invaluable.
Team Bonding Beyond the Rink
Wickfest was more than a hockey tournament for the Panthers — it was a full team experience that strengthened chemistry and connection throughout the weekend.
On Friday, the team took part in an escape room, putting communication, teamwork and problem-solving to the test before heading out to the White Rock Pier, giving players and families time to explore and enjoy the area together.
Saturday provided a more relaxed pace, allowing the players to rest, recharge and spend time together away from the rink as the tournament intensity continued.
On Sunday, the team wrapped up the weekend with time in the games room, enjoying activities such as arcade games, laser tag, roller skating and go-karts — a fun and fitting way to close out the Wickfest experience as a group.
These off-ice moments played a key role in building trust and unity, contributing to the strong team effort shown throughout the tournament.

Heart & Hustle Recognition
The Panthers also presented their Heart & Hustle Award, recognizing players who embodied effort, courage and determination throughout the tournament.

Brenna, the team’s youngest player, earned recognition for her fearless compete level and relentless effort.

Mila was recognized for coming into her own during the tournament, showing growth, effort and commitment every shift.

Kaleigha Dion was acknowledged for her steady play throughout Wickfest and her two-goal performance in the final game.
What’s Next
The Panthers return home this weekend and will host the Wood Buffalo Huskies on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. at the RJ Arena in Bonnyville.
After a demanding Wickfest tournament, the Panthers return stronger, closer and more confident, carrying valuable lessons forward into the remainder of the season.
