Mayor Bob Mattice Settles Into Leadership Role in Cold Lake
Cold Lake’s newest mayor is settling into the role after a fall election that marked the end of an era at City Hall.
Bob Mattice was elected mayor in the October 2025 municipal election, following one term on City Council. He stepped into the role after longtime mayor Craig Copeland chose not to seek another term.
Mattice says the transition has been smooth, thanks to strong council dynamics and experienced administration.
“It’s been pretty seamless, really. Council works well together, administration is strong, and that makes the job a lot easier.”
He also acknowledged Copeland’s leadership legacy, which spanned nearly two decades as mayor.
Copeland was first elected to City Council in 2004, serving one term as a councillor before winning the mayor’s chair in 2007. He was re-elected as mayor in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2021, serving five consecutive terms. The City of Cold Lake recently recognized his years of service with a luncheon held on Sunday.
“You don’t come into a role like this without a bit of guidance,” Mattice said. “Mayor Copeland left big shoes to fill, but he also left us in a good position.”
Despite the change in leadership, Mattice said the core focus at City Hall remains the same.
“At the end of the day, it’s about representing residents, listening to concerns, and making the best decisions we can as a group.”
He added that the council remains unified, even when opinions differ.
“We may not always agree on everything, but we all want what’s best for Cold Lake.”
Mattice said his experience on the council prior to running for mayor helped prepare him for the role and reinforced the importance of collaboration.
“You learn quickly that nothing gets done alone.”
