The Bonnyville Sr. Pontiacs left no doubt on Saturday night about where they intend to sit in the SaskAlta Hockey League standings. A relentless attack, disciplined structure and a full buy-in from every line powered Bonnyville to a commanding 15–1 win over the Kitscoty Monarchs at home.

Head coach Corey Wandler said after the game that the scoreline wasn’t the focus. The performance was. “We wanted a full 60, not a 20-minute flash,” he explained, noting that the group has been working to build consistency, not just offence.

Early and Often

Bonnyville set the tone immediately with six first-period goals, including a short-handed strike from Coltan Buchta, who finished the night with a four-point performance.
Brayden Labant added two of his own, and the Pontiacs were already in full control before the intermission.

The second period picked up where the first left off. Janson Pashniak, Denis Cadrin, James Rabbit and Maeson Stabbler all found the back of the net as Bonnyville pushed the lead to 10–0.

The third period saw the Pontiacs continue to roll. Orrie Wood completed a hat trick with two more goals, Labant added his 17th of the season, Rabbit scored again, and Christian Foisy capped the night with a buzzer-beater at 0:02.

Kitscoty broke the shutout with a powerplay marker midway through the third.

A Total Team Effort

Wandler praised the group for sharing the workload instead of leaning on just one line. “Everyone contributed. That’s how we have to play,” he said. The depth was clear on the scoresheet:

  • Eight players scored goals

  • Four players had multi-goal nights

  • Four players had three or more points

Bonnyville outshot Kitscoty 54–40, including a 24-shot first period that overwhelmed the Monarchs early. The Pontiacs were 2-for-3 on the powerplay and added a short-handed goal for good measure.

Wandler Happy with Structure, Not Just Goals

While the offence drew the spotlight, Wandler pointed to the defensive habits behind it. He noted the group did a much better job supporting the puck, limiting second chances and keeping Kitscoty to the outside.

“Our legs were moving and our details were there,” he said. “That’s the part I’m taking from this one.”

He also highlighted the penalty kill, which held Kitscoty to one goal on eight chances despite a stretch of back-to-back penalties in the first and second periods.

Building Toward the Next Test

The Sr. Pontiacs sit in a strong early-season position, but Wandler stressed there’s still more to sharpen. Saturday’s win was less about the score and more about setting a standard.

“The guys know what our game should look like. Now we have to show it every weekend,” he said.

Bonnyville will look to carry the momentum into next weekend as the SaskAlta schedule tightens and rivalries heat up.
