Bonnyville RCMP Warn: Idling Vehicles Are Becoming Easy Targets for Thieves
Bonnyville RCMP are reminding drivers to think twice before leaving their vehicles idling and unattended this winter. While warming up the car on a cold morning is a familiar habit, doing so with the keys inside continues to be a major contributor to local vehicle thefts.
Auto Theft Numbers Remain High
So far this year, the Bonnyville area has seen:
▪️ 128 stolen vehicles
▪️ 28 occurrences of flight from police
▪️ 56 fail-to-remain collisions
Police say many of these incidents start with an avoidable choice: leaving the keys in a running vehicle.
RCMP Increasing Patrol Awareness
“We’re asking residents and visitors in the Bonnyville area to help us reduce opportunities for vehicle theft by cleaning out their vehicles, parking them in a garage when possible, or installing a remote starter,” said Bonnyville RCMP.
Members on patrol have been directed to speak with drivers when they spot idling, unoccupied vehicles. Officers will also reach out to businesses that manage fleet vehicles, encouraging them to remind employees about the risk of leaving vehicles running.
Winter Vehicle Security Tips
RCMP recommend the following steps to keep vehicles secure:
▪️ Install a remote starter so your keys stay with you.
▪️ Use your garage if you have one. Clear out space to park inside.
▪️ Never leave a vehicle unattended with the keys in it, even if locked.
▪️ Remember: thieves need only minutes to steal a vehicle, and seconds if it is already running.
▪️ Plugging in your block heater helps your vehicle warm faster.
▪️ If you do not have a garage, consider a block heater or remote starter instead of idling with the keys inside.
The message is simple: Never leave your idling vehicle unattended with the keys in it.
