Battle of the Bands Brings the Noise — and the Heart — to Kehewin Cree Nation
Kehewin School was buzzing this week as students packed the gym for Battle of the Bands — the junior sports kind, not the guitar-smashing kind. The place had that perfect mix of excitement, nerves, and pure small-town pride that only Kehewin Cree Nation can pull off.
I showed up with Lakeland Connect, and the kids wasted no time taking over the interview mic like seasoned pros.
Kids With Confidence
The first question was simple: “How you guys doing this weekend?”
One student answered without missing a beat:
“We’re doing really good so far.”
No hesitation, just confidence.
Another student summed up why they play in four perfect words:
“I just like the sport.”
Sometimes the simple answers are the real ones.
Meet Some of the Players
Tensley Youngchief stepped forward next, calm and collected, introducing herself like she’s already planning future post-game interviews.
Right beside her was Audrey Badger, who brought that mix of quiet determination and team pride you see in all great young athletes.
When I asked if they were playing again tomorrow, the whole group answered together:
“Yes.”
Clear. Focused. Ready.
Community and Competition
Battle of the Bands in Kehewin is more than a school event.
It’s community spirit, teammates cheering each other on, and kids playing for something bigger than themselves.
Watching them interact — joking around, supporting each other, and stepping up to speak — you could feel what this place means to them. Pride in their school. Pride in their Nation. Pride in their team.
