Bonnyville Health Centre Opens Its Doors to Share Updates and Gather Community Input

Published On: November 9, 2025By

The Bonnyville Health Centre invited the public in for a closer look at recent upgrades and future plans during an open house on October 29th, offering transparency on changes already made and gathering feedback on what comes next.

Obstetrics Now on the Main Floor

One of the major changes shared at the open house was the relocation of obstetrics from the upper floor to the main level. The move is part of a broader effort to improve efficiency, access and overall patient flow within the building.

Emergency Department Renovations Expected Soon

The next upgrade will focus on the Emergency Room, with renovations expected to begin in December. Planned changes include increasing the number of chairs in the waiting area and updating the nursing station to better support patient movement and reduce congestion.

These improvements aim to address bottlenecks that arise when patients coming through the ER cannot be moved to inpatient beds.

Long-Term Care Shortage Creating Pressure

A key issue behind the congestion is the lack of long-term care spaces in Bonnyville. When residents require ongoing support but there are no beds available in long-term care or extended care, they remain in acute care for extended periods. This ties up beds, slows ER admissions, and strains the hospital’s capacity.

Need for a New Care Facility

Covenant Health has identified Bonnyville as a potential site for a new facility offering long-term care and assisted living. Currently, there is no middle-ground option between Bonnylodge and full long-term care, forcing residents to move sooner than necessary. Any new project is still in early discussion, and community input will play a critical role.

Community Feedback Remains Essential

The open house allowed residents to see what has been completed so far, learn what is planned next and share their concerns. The Bonnyville Health Centre Community Board continues to advocate for local needs and encourages residents to stay engaged as plans move forward.
