Published On: October 29, 2025By

History was made in Elk Point as Wanda Cochrane was elected the town’s first female mayor in the October 20 municipal election. Cochrane received 279 votes, defeating Terri Hampson, who earned 207.

A member of the 2021–2025 council, Cochrane now leads a team that includes returning councillors Dwayne Yaremkevich, Tim Smereka, and Jason Boorse, along with newcomer Shaun Schaferick.

Cochrane’s focus heading into the new term includes encouraging economic growth, attracting new residents, and improving community services, such as bylaw enforcement and healthcare access. She also plans to promote Elk Point as an ideal community for families, entrepreneurs, and remote workers.

Working with CAO Darrell Lessmeister, who joined the Town in July, Cochrane and council will continue efforts to strengthen regional partnerships and position Elk Point for sustainable growth.

Her election marks a new era of leadership built on collaboration, revitalization, and community pride.
