Unexpected sprinkler drama can’t cool off the Pontiacs’ weekend momentum

The Bonnyville Pontiacs saw an unexpected twist during Friday night’s home game against the Devon Xtreme, when a stray puck hit a sprinkler head inside the R.J. Lalonde Arena, setting off a sudden downpour that brought the game to an early end.

With just over five minutes left in the first period and Devon leading 2–1, the ice quickly became unplayable as staff and firefighters rushed in to shut off the system. Fans watched from the stands as the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority and Centennial Centre staff worked in unison to protect the facility and start cleanup.

Thanks to that quick response and some late-night teamwork, the rink was ready again by Saturday — and the Pontiacs didn’t disappoint.

Returning to the ice with energy and focus, Bonnyville battled back to a 4–2 win over the Canmore Eagles, in front of a lively crowd of 536 fans. Niehaus netted two goals, while Emigh and Costantino each added one, helping the Pontiacs turn a soggy setback into a weekend victory story.

Head Coach Chad Mercier credited the community spirit that kept the weekend rolling: “That’s Bonnyville for you. Everyone came together — the fire crews, the C2 staff, and our fans. We’re proud to call this rink home.”

A rescheduled date for the Devon Xtreme game will be announced soon.
