Covenant Health held a community engagement session on Oct. 6 at the Bonnyville Seniors Centre, Pioneer Hall, as part of a province-wide effort to improve culturally safe healthcare and strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities across Alberta.

A Day of Reflection and Connection

The gathering began with a moment of reflection centred on gratitude and tradition, acknowledging the importance of prayer and thankfulness in Indigenous culture. The tone was set for a day focused on learning, listening, and mutual respect.

Advancing Reconciliation in Healthcare

The event brought together Elders, knowledge keepers, community leaders, and residents to share their stories and experiences within the healthcare system. Conversations highlighted the need for continued efforts toward reconciliation, with participants discussing how trust, understanding, and equality must be at the core of healthcare delivery.

Discussions also addressed the realities of racism and the barriers it creates for Indigenous people seeking medical care. Participants spoke about how fear of discrimination or lack of access in rural areas can discourage people from getting the help they need.

Turning Conversation into Action

Covenant Health representatives took part in the discussions and noted that meaningful change often starts with small, practical steps. Suggestions included frontline strategies to improve patient experiences and strengthen relationships between healthcare providers and Indigenous communities.

The Bonnyville session was one of several being held across the province, each aimed at fostering open dialogue and guiding the organization’s ongoing journey toward reconciliation through action, understanding, and respect.
