VIDEO: Major oil companies lacing ’em up for charity in expanded Thermal Cup
A massive fundraiser that has continued to grow into a competitive outlet for major oil companies is back on Saturday.
It’s called the Thermal Cup and thanks to big-time buy-in from producers and sponsors, this has become a huge contributor to Kidsport chapters across northeastern Alberta.
Last year alone, a total of $33,000 was raised to help fund sport registrations in Bonnyville, Cold Lake, St. Paul, Wood Buffalo, Vermilion, and Lloydminster for children in need.
What began as a single hockey game between well-site supervisors for Canadian Natural Resources against Imperial Oil, expanded to include Strathcona Resources and Cenovus Energy, a day full of games.
Now this year, the competition is that much deeper.
Suncor Energy and Connacher Oil and Gas are also in the mix, vying for the prize.
NES Fircroft has stopped up in a major way to grow this event, assisting with the administrative and organizing tasks involved in making such a splash.
A big 50/50 pot is already growing, there are silent auction items to bid on, and the whole day is a fully-licensed affair so spectators can enjoy a beverage.
There also intermission games for the chance to win prizes. When the hockey wraps up, there is an evening social.
Will Strathcona Resources be able to repeat as champs?
One thing is known — a lot of money is going back into local communities, and that’s one impressive looking trophy.
