WATCH: Speaker in Bonnyville on Wednesday to address leaving FCM, local environmental initiatives

Published On: March 12, 2025By

Maggie Smith is bringing her Northern Alberta speaking tour to Bonnyville on Wednesday night.

Under the title of “Keeping local politics local”, Smith is part of the group called KICLEI, or Kicking International Council Out of Local Environmental Initiatives.

Smith’s message is talking about how top-down directives from the federal government, or United Nations, impactlocal council’s opportunity to receive grant funding.

She believes that the Federation of Canadian Municipalities isn’t helping rural areas, and are geared towards funneling people to large urban centres. The hope is that Wednesday morning she’ll get an audience with Bonnyville town council.

Smith visited the Lakeland Connect studio to outline her broader approach on Tuesday morning.

The talk is happening at the Beaver River Fish and Game building at 7:00PM on Wednesday night.
