Local powerlifter Jim Nahirnaik has achieved remarkable success. He brought home first place in his age and weight class at the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) National Powerlifting Championships in Summerside, PEI. The event, which saw athletes from across the country, was a significant milestone for Jim, who also broke three Alberta records.

Powerlifting, known for its inclusivity and focus on individual progression, has been Jim’s passion since 2018. Despite starting the sport in his late fifties, Jim has shown that age is no barrier to success. Jim credited his initial interest in the sport to his then-trainer, Jessica (Brennan). At the time, Jessica was a fitness trainer at the Bonnyville & District Centennial Centre (C2). Despite intending to compete in 2020, his plans were delayed until 2022.

Jim’s achievement is personal and a testament to the supportive environment at the C2. “The C2 is very welcoming and nonjudgmental,” Jim noted. “I’ve heard from people who feel embarrassed to go, but there’s very little judgment here. Even in national competitions, powerlifters come in all sizes and ages.”

Jim emphasized that powerlifting is a sport for all ages. “You don’t have to be excellent at 11 or a young buck of 20. I started in my late fifties. The key is progression. Start low and work your way up, adding a rep or a few pounds over time.”

For those considering entering the powerlifting world, Jim advises not to be intimidated. “People shy away because they think they’ll hurt themselves or can’t lift as much as others. But it’s about starting right, with help, and progressing at your own pace.”

Jim also highlighted the supportive community within Powerlifting. “Even your direct competition will cheer you on. There’s a real sense of camaraderie.”

The C2 has been instrumental in Jim’s success, with continuous upgrades and new equipment aiding his training. “I could never have accomplished this without the upgrades that Tyson has made to the C2,” Jim said.

As Jim continues to break records and inspire others, his journey underscores that it’s never too late to start lifting and achieving greatness in powerlifting. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of community support and the spirit of progression in sports.
