Smudging indoors at city facilities passes 1st reading
Indoor smudging at Cold Lake City facilities is getting closer to being permitted.
Described as a “housecleaning” item by Mayor Craig Copeland, first reading of the changes to the smoking bylaw passed at city council last week.
In the past, smudging has occurred indoors during ceremony inside the Energy Centre and FCSS, but the allowance was not written in the bylaws.
“During some of the ceremonies is smudging goes on. We just want to make sure that it’s inside our policy and continue that event,” said Copeland on The Morning After.
There will not be a public hearing on the bylaw.
Under the current bylaws, any type of smoke is not allowed in city buildings or facilities, as well as all public spaces unless a permit is given.
Second and third readings could occur at the next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, April 23.
There would be limitations to specific rooms or areas where smudging or pipe ceremonies could be allowed, as well as ensured access to a fire extinguisher.
