Evacuees can get one-time payment as wildfires continue to rage

Premier Danielle Smith has announced funding relief for evacuees escaping wildfires.

Beginning tomorrow, May 9, eligible evacuees will receive $1,250 per adult and an additional $500 per dependent child under 18 years.

This means that an evacuated family of four will receive $3,500.

It applies for any Albertan who has evacuated under mandatory order for seven consecutive days or more as a one-time payment.

Wildfires continue to rage across the province.

On Monday morning, an evacuation order for the Town of Edson was alerted. Drayton Valley remains evacuated as the fire remains uncontrolled.

First Nations communities have been hit hard.

Fire bans and off-highway vehicle bans on public lands are in place across Alberta in the Forest Protection Areas.

There may be some relief with some expected showers in areas across the province this week.

In the Lakeland area, tomorrow there is a chance of showers and a thunderstorm.

But as the week carries on it is expected to get hot and close to 30 degrees.
