Town of Bonnyville proclaims April 21 as Lights on Afterschool Day

The Town of Bonnyville has declared April 21 as Lights on Afterschool Day.

Deputy Mayor Kayla Blanchette made the proclamation at the April 11 Council meeting.

This will be the first year that the Town of Bonnyville participates in the province-wide event. Lights On Afterschool is a province-wide event celebrating after-school programs and their role in keeping children safe.

The School Age Care Directors Association (SACDA) is asking programs across the province to participate by either hosting their own event or having residents in communities show support by keeping their homes or business lights on until midnight on April 21.

“Council recognizes the importance of recognizing professionals who provide after-school care for kids,” said CAO, Bill Rogers.

“Especially in the Bonnyville region, it’s important for us because we have a lot of working families and so we are going to recognize them accordingly and support them.”

Communities are also encouraged to pick a landmark to light up in support, Council had since discussed ideas and alternatives for lighting up a landmark with it being the Town’s first participating year.
