Lakeland Panthers Award Night wrapping up the 2022-23 season

The Lakeland Panthers U11AA-U18AA wrapped up their hockey seasons together. The five teams gathered at the Glendon RCMP Hall on April 12 for dinner and laughs with their families before closing with awards.

As the 2022-2023 season comes to a close, the Panthers and their families got to hear from their coaches just how special and rewarding the past season has been.

“It’s the last opportunity to see these teams together and some are going to go on as they are graduating through, some are gonna play higher levels of hockey and move around. But it’s nice to get them together and have them recognized for the hard work they have done in the last season,” said Terry Rupp, President of Bonnyville Minor Hockey.

The Panthers program is expanding and welcoming in a new team next year. The U13AA Female Lakeland Panthers will be joining the hockey family and be the first female hockey team the Panthers have. The Panthers expanded last year by adding on their U16AA team.

“We are just looking forward to it. We are grateful that we have the opportunity to do it. There is strong female players in our region and I think it was recognized by Hockey Alberta that we put out a good program and we believe in development and a positive culture,” said Rupp.

“And it’s good for the females in our area where they don’t have to go away to play different hockey they can stay here and be at home in their beds every night and stay close and be close to their families.”

“So I’ve seen Zach obviously since he’s been a young player in the association, and he has always been a good character, always a smile on his face, always looks you in the eye and shakes your hand,” said Rupp.

“A lot of kids in the area sometimes think they need to leave thinking they need to play hockey in different areas, where Zach just was good at playing here developing as a Panther all the way through. He was always skilled enough and excelled at everything and that’s what the award is about the Panther who sets the culture for kids younger than himself and even older.”
