HEB hosting pruning workshop

To prune or not to prune? That’s one of the questions that will be answered at the upcoming Pruning Workshop at H.E. Bourgoin Middle School.

The workshop will be presented by Joan Engler from E-Tree, The Tree Fam on March 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the school. It will cover why pruning is important, what should be pruned, and how to prune. Engler will also share information on Plant Picks for 2023 including shade trees, privacy screening, fruit trees and shrubs, and ornamental shrubs.

The pruning workshop is the kickoff fundraiser for the school’s Outdoor Spaces Project to beautify the school grounds and enhance recreational opportunities for students and the community.

“Last year we asked our students to brainstorm ways to improve our outdoor space and they had great ideas about ways to make it more appealing and create opportunities for students to be more active,” said Assistant Principal Nicole Yadlowsky.

The HEB School Council has looked at all of the suggestions from students, staff and parents and is currently working with the school and school division to develop a plan and timelines for the project.

“This will be a multi-year project for the council and the fundraising foundation,” said Sarah Chileen, School Council Chair. “In addition to fundraisers like the pruning workshop, we will also be applying for grants and seeking out corporate donations for the project.”
