City to look at smoking bylaw for potential hookah lounge

Cold Lake city council will have a public hearing that would change a bylaw that could a hookah lounge to open.

At tonight’s council meeting, Mayor and council will look at amending the smoking bylaw to allow waterpipes, which would facilitate the opening of a shisha or hookah lounge, where patrons share tobacco or tobacco-free flavoured products from a communal water pipe.

The discussion comes as an investor is interested in opening a business like that in Cold Lake.

Currently, the city’s smoking bylaw does not allow the use of water pipes in public, whether the product has tobacco in it or not.

Residents can give their feedback in a public forum tonight at City Hall during the council meeting at 6:00pm.
