Hockey is back at the A.G. Ross arena !! This past weekend all of our teams saw some pre- season action to assist the league in the tiering process.

U-18 Avalanche

The U-18 Avalanche played Sunday night against the St. Paul Canadiens. The game ended in a two-all tie. Last year the Canadiens had our number, but it appears we are going to be a much stronger team this year. Fast and furious Kaleb’ Formula One’ Flamand and Gavin ‘ Green Light’ Kadutski feed off each other with one goal each and each one assisting the other.  Big rugged D men ‘Saint Nick’ Penner and ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce are also on the game sheet with assists. Goaltender, lanky Vanden ‘ Super Mario’ Moroziuk played super between the pipes.

U-15 Avalanche

The U-15 team are looking pretty good too. They played at home on Sunday as well winning big time, 9 to zip over Kitscoty. Two goals each for Braylee’ Little Willy’ Lesyk, Evett’ Snoop Dog’ Smereka, and Quinton ‘ Rampage’ Dumont – Quinney. Raif ‘ Rug Rat’ Evans-Anderson and Marcus Dion adding one goal each. Rylan Quinney Wapass with three assists.

U-11 Avalanche

The U 11 team opened their season Saturday at home losing a close one to Hughenden 10 to 7. A new player to town, Hunter Pankiw scored the first goal for the Avalanche. Hunter also assisted with one.  Hunter’s dad Rocky played all his minor hockey in Elk Point and recently moved back to the area.  Ava’ the Red Baron‘ Rawlake was flying high and firing her big guns, sending 3 pucks right on target into the mesh. Trust me, she’s going to be a force to reckon with this year.  The Red Baron also added an assist. Hudson ‘ the Bull’ Brousseau broke loose out of the bullpen on a tear with 3 goals and 3 assists. Tor’ Tornado’ Aarbo doing some awesome fore-checking with a couple of assists.  Wingman ‘ General Lee’ Barstad with 2 assists. Strong two-way defenseman  Lennox ‘All-Out‘ St. Arnault also with an assist. And first-time player Rylan Kryzanowski with a helper as well.

On Sunday the Avalanche had their hand’s full playing at home against Mallaig losing 15 to 1. The ‘Red Baron’ with the only goal assisted by the Bull and Tornado. Apparently, Mallaig has tiered their U 11 teams and this one is their top team with the majority of the players being the second year so most likely this will be their only meeting.

U-13 Avalanche

The U-13 Avalanche played two games this past weekend winning both of them by a landslide. At home Saturday winning 21 to 11 over Lac La Biche. On Sunday they traveled to Vermilion winning that one 12 to 3. Too many goals to report on all of them but ‘Wild Wyatt’ Fontaine, and Remington ‘Steel’ Reynolds got a whole bunch of them each. Jackson ‘ J.R.’Rawlake with a goal in both games. Looking like they’re going to have to find some stronger teams to play next weekend. Lots of forwards on this team, but not many players that care to play defense. No glory in playing in the trenches. Returning to the blue line this year are Jaxon ‘ Smitty’ Smith and Kestyn ‘ Cr’ Quinney. Smitty getting the green light scored his share of goals this past weekend.  Giving it a try on the blue line is unsung hero Tristan ‘ Bobcat’ Brousseau. Also playing on the point is Brody Trach, who is brand new to the team. Goaltending duties were shared this weekend by Owen ‘ Ollie the goalie’ Grykliak and Theo’ Longhorn’ Loughran-Quinney doing one game each.

U-9 Avalanche

The U 9 team played the season opener against Vermilion. Nothing to report this week on goal scorers or other plays but I was told it was a great game. We will be sure to get some highlights in the next few weeks.

Out of Town Players

This past weekend my granddaughter, Vienna ‘Bug’ Colbourne took the ice as an U-11 Jaguar. Her team took on a tough Fort McMurray squad and fell short in a double header weekend. Don’t let that fool you though, this team is looking strong and a lot can happen between exhibition season and the real thing!
