Slawuta Pond parking lot now closed, to be re-purposed
After discussions, the Town of Bonnyville has closed the Slawuta Pond parking lot.
Concrete barriers were put in the parking lot on Friday while still leaving a path for trailers to access the sani-dump. CAO Bill Rogers said the decision came because of issues with littering.
The Town has subleased the parking lot to Lakeland Catholic School Division, but after additional parking was built recently, Rogers said they didn’t have the same need for the lot.
“We’re going to repurpose that into something else, like a greenspace,” Rogers told Lakeland Connect. “We’re still working on what it is going to be and we’re going to have people that want to park to go walk on the trail, they we’ll be able to parallel park along the road there.
“We’ve had some litter problems and things like that. So we just figured make better use of the space.”
The collection of garbage has been highlighted as a problem at the parking lot for years.
With the decision made and the sublease to the school division cancelled, the Town will now move forward on how the lot will look next.
