KERR: Golf course logo spills the ‘t’

Author’s note: The error this editorial was written about WAS caught before publication and before the logo was finalized. I would like to offer my sincere apology for not double checking that, and commend the Town of St. Paul for their choice of logo for the St. Paul Golf Course.

How is it possible for this many people to look at a logo before approving it and not see the glaring, obvious mistake in it?

I am of course talking about the selection for the logo for the St. Paul Golf Course, as voted on by town council on Mar. 8, at the recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Board.

Don’t get me wrong. From an artistic perspective, I think their selection is 100 per cent the prettiest logo on offer. I really like it. And if it weren’t for this one mistake, the editorial would either be singing its praises or more than likely have no reason to exist.

The mistake, as I would think anyone could see, is the lower case ‘t’ in St. PAUL GOLF COURSE.

That ‘t’ is positively enraging.

Every other letter in the entire logo is capitalized. Except for the ‘t’.

Every other logo presented as an option has all of the letters capitalized, except for option 5 which reads ST. PAUL Golf Course. The lettering on option 5, while generally unattractive, is nowhere near as obnoxious as the single, solitary, lonely, lower case ‘t’ found in the approved upon option 2.

It’s not that I hate lower case letters. Far from it. They serve a useful purpose and allow the capitals to give emphasis where needed. It is the inconsistency of the thing which offends me so deeply. Every other letter in the logo is a capital. It SHOULD read ST. PAUL GOLF COURSE or St. Paul Golf Course. Anything else is inconsistent and aesthetically upsetting.

As a tax paying resident of the Town of St. Paul, I will be forwarding a copy of this editorial to administration and council in the hopes that they will rectify this tragic mistake before ordering all the swag.

My optometrists office also called earlier today to remind me that my children and I are due for our yearly eye exams. I am more than happy to provide their contact information if any of town council, administration, the Parks and Recreation Board, or the designer of the logo are in need of a referral.
