RCMP have charged a man who was later found to be driving a stolen truck.

On January 6, members from the RCMP’s Lakeland Crime Reduction Unit (LCRU) were conducting patrols in the area of 50 Ave and 53 St in Cold Lake and saw a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driving dangerously in the area.

Police said a traffic stop was initiated and the driver, known to police, was arrested and taken into custody.

During the investigation, police discovered that the vehicle had been reported as stolen during a break and enter that happened at a Bonnyville business on Nov. 6, 2020.

Police also discovered that the vehicle had been given a false vehicle identification number plate in an attempt to hide that it was a stolen vehicle. There were also two children in the vehicle at the time of the suspects arrest.

Jarrid Desjarlais-Janvier of the Elizabeth Metis Settlement was charged with the following offences:

• Operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited (x2);
• Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000;
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000;
• Fail to comply with Probation Order;
• Alter/Destroy/Remove a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN);
• Operate an unregistered motor vehicle;
• Operate an uninsured motor vehicle;
• Operate a motor vehicle without holding a subsisting operator’s licence;
• Operate a motor vehicle with child weighing 18 kg as passenger if motor vehicle is not equipped with a child restraint system.

Desjarlais-Janvier was held for a bail hearing where he was released by a Justice of the Peace on a $250 cash deposit Release Order.

Desjarlais-Janvier is scheduled to appear in Cold Lake Provincial Court on February 24, 2021.
