Alberta sees 57 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, biggest single-day increase in province

The biggest single-day increase so far in COVID-19 cases in Alberta came today as 57 new cases were announced for a total of 358 in the province.

One new case has been detected in the North Zone, which extends just north of Edmonton to the provincial border, while a third case has been confirmed in the Vermilion River County area.

There is no new cases in the Lakeland region with still two confirmed cases in the Bonnyville region and one in the Cold Lake area.

One person has passed away in the past 24 hours, an elderly woman in Calgary, raising the provincial count to two deaths.

There is also a spread of COVID-19 at a long-term care facility in Calgary with two residents and one staff members who’ve also tested positive.

Twenty-eight cases could be through community transmission with people without previous travel history.

Seven people are in intensive care, while three people have recovered total from the virus.

• Edmonton Zone: 86 cases
• Central Zone: 28 cases
• North Zone: 20 cases
• South Zone: 8 cases

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw updated information on the Edmonton curling bonspiel that saw a spread of the virus from March 11-14.

Twelve of 47 Alberta health care workers have tested positive which includes physicians in the Red Deer, Edmonton and Calgary areas.

Dr. Hinshaw said all close contacts have been notified.

The isolation timelines again is that anyone who is feeling symptoms like sore throat, cough, fever is told to stay home until they feel well and have self-isolated for at least 10 days.

If they still don’t feel well, they are told to stay home until they do.

All travellers and close contacts are told to self-isolate for 14 days.
