Cold Lake RCMP arrest male for online child exploitation

On Feb. 18, 2020, Cold Lake RCMP General Investigative Section (GIS) began inquires into a matter related to indecent communication with a minor online.

On Feb. 28, 2020, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Cold Lake and the Bonnyville GIS Teams assisted by Bonnyville and Cold Lake RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence in Bonnyville, AB.

Police seized three gaming consoles, one computer, three cell phones and an electronic storage device during the execution of the search warrant. One suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Keenan Burlaka (aka Greene) (19) of Bonnyville, Alta., was charged with:

  • Uttering threats against a person
  • Extortion without a firearm
  • Criminal harassment
  • Indecent communication
  • Harassing communication

Keenan Burlaka has been released on conditions to abstain from the use of any social media and not to be in the presence of a minor without their guardian/parent present. He was released and will be appearing in Cold Lake Provincial Court on May 20, 2020.

“The investigation is continuing and we have engaged other specialized units, Northern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation Unit and KARE Counter Exploitation Unit, to assist in the progression of this file,” says Corporal Marie-Eve Mackenzie-Plante, Cold Lake GIS. “We are looking for any other victims that may have had inappropriate contact with the accused through social media and encourage parents to be aware of all their children’s activities utilizing various platforms.”
