Tales from the Timebox: November 5th, 2019
Pumped up with candy from Halloween the Atom Avalanche traveled to Marwayne to play against the Dewberry / Marwayne Sled Dogs on Friday night. I’m sure the Dogs munched on a big bowl of candy too. Apparently the Sled Dogs are listed as a Tier II team and we are a Tier III team, but there really isn’t that much difference if you look at the score and shots on goal. The Sled Dogs with a few more shots winning 5-3. ‘Wee Willy’ Braylee Lesyk with two unassisted goals. Brendan ‘Buzz Saw’ Kadutski with one goal, his was also unassisted. Jaxon ‘Smitty’ Smith strapping on the big pads and mask getting the goaltending duties in this one.
On Saturday the boys hosted another Tier II team, this time Bonnyville, losing another close one 7-3. Free wheeling ‘Wee Willy’ with two more unassisted goals. Kale ‘ the Hawk’ Ockerman swooping in finding the back of the net with one. The ‘Hawk also taking two trips over to the sin bin for a visit. ‘Buzz Saw’. getting on the sheet with an assist. The shots on goal were very close 20 to 17 in favor of the Pontiacs. ‘Wild Wyatt ‘ Fontaine getting the call between the posts in this one.
I’m not surprised if most of these players were tired and worn out before the game even started. The Peewee Avalanche played only one game this weekend on Saturday night against the Irma Aces . Many of their players were also playing in a volleyball tournament all day just down the street at the F. G, Miller High School. They were up early and played hard all day. The kids on this team are all very athletic and talented. Many of them play multiple sports. The final score a seven all tie. But it didn’t start out that way.
The Avalanche down by two goals at the end of the first period. Fired up in the second period the Avalanche would score four. The Aces adding one in the second period. 4-3 at the end of forty minutes in favor of the Avalanche. Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand scoring the first goal for the Avalanche on the power play assisted by the persistent forechecking wing man, ‘Bo Diddley’ Fontaine. ‘Bo Diddley’ is one of the best forecheckers I have seen in peewee hockey. Madden ‘Mad Dog’ Flamand adding another goal two minutes later. Rugged two way defense woman Spencer ‘Goldie Locks’ Malachowski with the helper. Goldie Locks is a terrific back checker and will seldom be beaten in a foot race. Gavin ‘Giver’ Kadutski and ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford with one goal each, unassisted, to give the Avalanche the lead. But the Aces would not go down easy. Every time the Av’s scored they answered. Timmy ‘the Freight’ Train would plow his way to the net scoring a power play goal. The Av’s taking a two goal lead. The Aces would tie it again. Kaysen ‘Dynomite’ DeMoissac with one assisted by Top Gunner and ‘Snoop Dog’ Evett Smereka. Then Formula One with his second goal of the game, a short handed one. The Av’s with a two goal lead late in the game. But not for long, the Aces adding two in the last two minutes to tie the game. They say a tie is like kissing your sister. Maybe not in this case . By the looks of the game sheet and the penalties, these guys don’t have a lot of love between them.
Two wins for the Bantam Avalanche this past weekend put some big smiles on the players and parents faces. Playing at home on Saturday winning 4-3 over Kitscoty. Two goals each for Brady the Bionic Man Hymanyk and Wyatt ‘Wildman’ Pavoll. Two assists by the grinding D Man Dean the’Machine’ Ockerman. Ceajay Quinney, ‘Kid Kade’ Fonatine and Landon the Magnificent Malchowski with one assist each. On Sunday the boys traveled north to Plamondon winning 4-2 in this one. A goal and an assist for the ‘Kid Kade. This Kid like to take the body. No matter the size of them, he will try to level them.
A goal for another of the teams heavy hitters. Sam ‘Spiderman’ Rogal. He likes to crunch them against the boards too. His cousin Josef ‘Big Red’ Theriault finding the twine with one. And Landon the ‘Magnificient’ barreling down the wing driving to the net with one . ‘Saint Nic’ Penner, Ryan ‘Ram Rod’ Cameron and Cea Jay Quinney with the assists.
Behind the mask , guarding the cage all weekend ‘Super Mario’ Vanden Moroziuk did a super job as he has all year. On Saturday he faced 29 shots, on Sunday he faced 37 shots. And a big happy birthday going out today to his proud hockey mom Myrna Moroziuk . In out of town action our former Storm female players are doing really well. Playing for the Dewberry Wild Jenna ‘Precious’ Poitras scored a goal on Sunday against Wainwright. Sydnee ‘the Kid’ Crawford assisted on two goals including the one by ‘Precious’. Now playing in St. Paul on their female midget team, Halle ‘Comet’ Stybel scored a hat trick on Friday night against the Wild. Jadey the Lady Capjack is playing center for the Lakeland Jaguars female midget team. Rylee ‘the Rocket’ Warawa is on the Lakeland bantam team.
