Bonnyville Renegades lose in peewee league final capping off football season

The Bonnyville Renegades football season came to a close this weekend in the league championship.

The Renegades fell 46-8 to the Lloydminster Colts on Sunday in the final peewee game of the season.

Bonnyville defeated the Cold Lake Rams 42-12 in the semi-finals to advance.

“They’ve got a great team over there on the other side and a huge offensive and defensive line and we didn’t have an answer for it today,” said Renegades coach Jason Morgan.

“They have some big, big kids out there and we just didn’t have the size to match up with them. We had the heart, but just not the talent. They got a pretty talented group of kids there and very well-coached team,” he said.

It is the second consecutive finish in 2nd place for the Renegades who found themselves on the losing end of another rout in 2018 to the Lloydminster Colts.

Morgan said he thinks there were plenty of positives to take away for next year.

“A great season. The positive to come out of it is we had a lot of 10-year-olds and 11-year-olds playing a lot of football this year, so it only looks good for next year. We got two kids that are 10 years old who ran the ball most of the season and coming to the playoffs we switched it up with the bigs in there.

“But that’s a year of running that we’ll have next year. People don’t usually have 10-year-olds running the ball and starting every game and we did so it’s looking good for next year. We got lots of big kids at 10 years old. Get them the confidence and some heart and it’ll be a nasty line for us next year,” he said.

The graduating players into the Bandits program will bring a lot of hurt to opponents too.

“He’s got lots of hurt coming his way,” said Morgan of Bandits coach Robbie Cole.

“There’s lots of talent, some great competitors. There was Zayn Ward and Sara [Fagnan] and a couple of linemen. It’ll be good for them and good change. It’s nice to see the kids growing and it’s nice that he’s getting kids that have some football experience now three, four years of it rather than a year of it, or not.”
