Poppy campaign begins in the Lakeland to remember sacrifice and service

The poppy campaign to remember those who lost their lives serving Canada has begun.

Beginning October 25, Royal Canadian Legion branches across the country have placed poppy bins in shops looking for donations and more importantly to consider the impact and sacrifice of Canadian Armed Forced members during the lead up to Remembrance Day.

“The poppy campaign reminds us to remember our past and to respect our present freedom and to celebrate our future freedom made possible by those that sacrificed their lives and those that still put their life on the line every day,” said Jamie Beaupre, Bonnyville Legion Manager.

“Every penny raised by the wreath and poppy campaign stays to help out those on our community, young and old,” he said.

The poppy campaign runs until Remembrance Day, November 11, and the poppy is to be worn on the left side over the heart.

The phenomenon started when Canadian military doctor wrote his famous poem In Flanders Fields after the funeral of a friend who died in the Second Battle of Ypres in World War I.

Wreaths are available by contacting Jamie Beaupre at the Legion.
