Program will have a strong focus on Aboriginal histories, perspectives and culture.

Students in communities from across northern Alberta will benefit from a partnership between Portage College and the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) at the University of Alberta in the fall of 2022.

ATEP is for college students ready to complete their third and fourth year of university studies toward their Bachelor of Education Degree.

The ATEP curriculum has a strong focus on Aboriginal histories, worldview, perspectives and culture, alongside the rigor of the requirements of an Elementary Education Degree. This prepares teachers to take up the Alberta Teaching Quality Standards in their classrooms, and this foundation will be a benefit to all students.

This is a proven and successful partnership between Portage College and the University of Alberta – being the third time ATEP is offered. According to Guy Gervais, Vice President Academic at Portage College, it’s all about our commitment to offering students access to quality education, “This is a great opportunity for students to achieve a Bachelor of Education degree without having to leave their home communities.”

Students interested in gaining an Education Degree in ATEP are encouraged to register with Portage College in fall 2019 to earn their prerequisite 60 credits in the University Transfer program and then transition into the ATEP program in 2022.
