Tales from the Doug-Out: June 25th, 2019

Crazy weather is all I can say! The rain wouldn’t come at all in the month of May and now we cannot seem to shut off the tap. We do need the rain of course, but it made for some juggling of games this past weekend during the Lakeland League finals. Many games at all of the sites were either shortened or didn’t happen at all. The ones that did happen sure were exciting. Including our Peewee boys, the Sox.

Peewee Sox

Our Peewee Boys hosted the Peewee finals and ended up playing in the Gold Medal game against the Bonnyville Braves. Some mighty fine pitching by both sides in the final game. The Sox using Sam ‘Spiderman’ Rogal for the first four and a half innings, then  ‘Kid Kade’ Fontaine coming in in relief.

The Sox down by only a two runs for most of the game. Then late in the game a few more Braves crossed the plate, but the Sox would not go down without a bit of a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Down by 5 runs, the Sox with two runners on base at the time and none out.  ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce at the plate hitting a hard grounder to second, but not enough to get through the gap. He was thrown out at first but his hit scored a run.

Then the speedy ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford who was attempting to steal home on the same hit and was tagged out at the plate making it two out. The ‘Mighty Casey’ Warawa at the plate just missed putting one out of the park to keep the team alive, the ball slicing over the fence foul. The next pitch was a swing and a miss, the Mighty Casey has struck out and the ball game was over. A silver medal for the Peewee Sox. Great job boys and coaches.

Mosquito Sox

They didn’t play each other all year, but our two Mosquitoes teams ending up playing against each other in the pouring rain for the Bronze Medal game in Bonnyville Sunday afternoon. Elk Point #1 coached by Dennell Anderson winning a nail biter 13-12 over the Elk Point #2 team coached by Jackie Penz.

Both of these teams have some very promising talented ball players and it’s great to see we have enough for two teams and coaches that are working hard to develop their skills.

Other notable teams

The Rookies tournament in Cold Lake was cancelled on Saturday due to the rain. Although I never received any information I do know the Bantam girls the Pumas won a Silver Medal as well up in Pierceland on the weekend.

The Squirt girls travelled all the way to Lac La Biche to play and the diamonds were under water. If it makes you feel any better Lac La Biche travelled all the way here to Elk Point on Saturday for two games. The pouring rain came before they could play and they turned around and went back home without playing as well.

Saving the best for last, grandson Phoenix Colborne playing bantam for the Bonnyville Braves had not won a game all year until this past weekend. They won the very first game of the year and then another this past weekend in Elizabeth Settlement winning the Bronze Medal.
